Vegetable Production Team Member

About Fishkill Farms

Fishkill Farms is a 270 acre fruit and vegetable farm in East Fishkill, NY. Our homegrown organic vegetables and eco-certified fruit is marketed through our year-round Farm Store and Pick-Your-Own operation, our 400-member CSA, and several farmer’s markets locally and in New York City. Starting with peas and strawberries and culminating with apples and pumpkins in the Fall, the farm provides family friendly outdoor-fun for the local community. At our peak we host thousands of visitors daily.

About The Position

Our Vegetable Production Team is at the core of our farm’s diverse vegetable operation, and participates in every aspect of planting, growing, harvesting, storage and sales for more than 100 varieties of certified organic vegetables grown on 20 acres. They will work alongside a team of talented and diverse farmers in various settings, from our three greenhouses to our fields, packing shed, and farmers markets. Team members will also have the opportunity to interact directly with customers through attending and running one local farmer's market stand or CSA pickup each week. This is a fun and challenging position for those with previous farming experience seeking to take their skills to the next level at a mid-size organic farm. Our uniquely diverse range of fruits and vegetables, the opportunity to participate in various marketing activities, as well as the availability of local educational CRAFT meetings and workshops will provide ample learning opportunities for crew members.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Greenhouse work from seeding to transplanting, watering and maintenance.
  • Direct seeding and planting in the field as well as trellising and pruning crops.
  • Hoeing and mechanical cultivation, mowing, hand weeding and mulch laying.
  • Harvesting, washing and packing for multiple market outlets from CSA to wholesale.
  • Merchandising, display setup and communication with customers about the farm’s production practices at markets and CSA pickups.
  • Working with and/or operating various farm machinery such as forklifts, vegetable washing line, farm trucks as well as tractor driven planting, cultivation and harvest implements.
  • Opportunity for growth through specializing in the various aspects of our operation, including crew leadership and employee management.
  • This is a seasonal, full-time position beginning in the spring (April) and ending mid-November, averaging 55 hours/week, with the possibility of year-round employment.

Proficiencies and Qualifications

We’re looking for hardworking, detail-oriented folks with at least one season’s experience farming to join our team.
Must be ready to take on the demanding schedule, pace, and inevitable challenges of a farming season with consistency and good humor; ability and enthusiasm for performing repetitive/challenging tasks in all weather conditions.

Hourly rate starting at $9.75 and up, based upon experience. Potential for management roles for candidates with more experience. Housing on or off farm.

Vegetable Harvest Manager

About The Position

Fishkill Farms is looking for an experienced and talented individual to coordinate and organize the weekly vegetable harvest. The Harvest Manager will work collaboratively with the Vegetable Production Manager to determine when crops are ready for harvest, and will work with the Farmers Market Manager as well as the CSA Coordinator and Farm Store Manager to determine what produce is allocated to each outlet every week. In addition to providing leadership and hands-on direction on harvest days for a crew of approximately eight, the weekly schedule will include general vegetable production work. This is a full time, year-round position, as we continue to supply our winter CSA, three farmers markets, and our farm store throughout the winter with storage crops and greens from our greenhouses. Hours range from less than 40/week during the winter to over 60/week during the main season.

In addition to these core tasks, the Harvest Manager will:

  • Order and maintain a consistent supply of materials needed for harvesting and packing produce.
  • Keep detailed paper and digital harvest records.
  • Train and monitor new crew members on harvest techniques, quality standards, speed and efficiency.
  • Manage the washing and packing of produce in the pack shed with the assistance of the Farmers Market Manager.
  • Efficiently organize and manage storage of fresh produce in our walk-in-coolers.
  • Coordinate with the Farm Store Manager to provide fresh produce as demand and sales dictate.
  • Collaborate with Farmers Market Manager on ways to increase sales and implement new marketing techniques.
  • Work with the Wholesale Manager to discuss potential surplus/lower quality crops available for wholesale.
  • Additional responsibilities in vegetable production may include planting, weeding, greenhouse work, tractor operation, and attending farmers markets.


  • At least two full seasons on organic vegetable farms, at least one of which spent in a management or assistant management roll.
  • Extensive knowledge of vegetable harvest and post harvest procedures.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • A passion for high quality food and sustainable agriculture.
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Valid drivers license.

Pick-Your-Own Garden & CSA Coordinator

The Pick-Your-Own Garden & CSA Coordinator is the face of the farm, and creates a welcoming and enjoyable environment for both members of our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group and the general public. The PYO & CSA Coordinator works closely with the CSA Manager to assist with the weekly CSA distribution, and the Vegetable Production Manager and Farm manager to help curate a beautiful Pick-Your-Own vegetable garden experience for the public.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service and communication
  • Open, run and close the Pick-Your-Own sales booth
  • Oversee the upkeep of the public and CSA Pick-Your-Own gardens including field activities such as weeding, mowing/weed wacking, planting, pruning & harvesting of vegetables and flowers (handle daily maintenance and coordinate with the Vegetable Production Manager for larger tasks)
  • Create and maintain promotional/informational signage for both the PYO fields and CSA pick-up
  • Keep PYO and CSA supplies organized and maintained (harvest tools, containers, signs, tables, tents, etc.)
  • Assist with setting up and running the on-farm CSA pick-up, and help allocate PYO portion of the CSA share.
  • Promote CSA program through flyering and tabling
  • Assist with planning CSA orientation and end-of-season potluck events
  • Harvest to replenish store produce as needed from the PYO gardens

Farm Production Manager

About the Position

The Production Manager oversees all aspects of growing, harvest and storage for 100+ varieties of vegetables and fruits produced for our multiple outlets, through 4 seasons of the year. Working closely with the Vegetable Manager and Orchard Manager, and production crews, the Production Manager is responsible for the successful growing, harvest, storage and packing of all of the farm’s crops.

This is a dynamic position for an experienced farmer who is enthusiastic about growing our production and fruit and vegetable operations with us.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Coordinating harvest and packing of fruits and vegetables to fill orders for our multiple outlets.
  • Supervises product flow from harvest, storage, inventory management, packing and distribution.
  • Hands-on management and support of our production management team; supervising crop planning, planting, primary tillage, irrigation, orchard training, pruning and pest management.
  • Supervising crews numbering 20-30 including hiring, training and scheduling.
  • Equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Coordinating farmer’s market staff and distribution logistics.
  • Maintaining detailed production, planting, pest management, harvest, packing and distribution records.

Proficiencies and Qualifications

  • At least 5 years production farming on a similar sized operation or larger, with at least two years experience managing large teams.
  • Expertise in all aspects of organic vegetable production at a commercial scale. Strong preference for candidates with additional in-depth knowledge of commercial fruit production.
  • Proficiency with agricultural equipment including tractors and implements.
  • Experience with CSA model, Farmers Markets and direct to business wholesale.
  • High level of organization; excellent communication skills. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with management and staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Google Docs and other planning and recordkeeping software.

Assistant Farm Store Manager

About the Position

The Assistant Farm Store Manager will work alongside our Store & Pick-Your-Own Manager to oversee store operations and Pick-Your-Own sales of our homegrown fruits and vegetables along with hundreds of other locally-made products. They will participate in sales, customer service, food preparation and cleaning to provide a top-notch experience for our customers.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Oversee daily operations of the store including opening, closing, as well as cleanup on the Store Manager’s days off.
  • Responsible for successful daily operations through a variety of specific tasks including: product ordering, inventory, point of sale system maintenance, cleaning, food preparation, merchandising, and customer service.
  • Scheduling, direction and feedback to staff, employee orientation and training.
  • Coordinating with dozens of local vendors to procure products in all departments including produce (local and homegrown), dry goods, grass-fed meats, cheeses and dairy & preserves.
  • Assist Store Manager during weekend hours with up to three additional shifts during the week. (Total hours will not typically exceed 40 except at peak season). Flexible scheduling.

Proficiencies and Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of retail/food industry experience with some management-level experience.
  • Technological proficiencies: Work with Farm Store's POS system, Inventory System, Google Docs, Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Desire to work in a mission-driven small agricultural business
  • Good organizational and leadership skills including ability to manage staff with varying roles and levels of experience and commitment
  • Love of food, farming, and a passion for sustainable, community-oriented agriculture is a must!
  • Availability to work 20-50 hours a week depending on season, including weekends
  • Food preparation and experience in commercial kitchens a strong plus.
  • Must be comfortable lifting heavy boxes and bags up to 50 pounds
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Reliable form of transportation to farm
